COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Many music, art, and community events are set in Charleston from March 20 to 26. Highlights include concerts at local venues—fun shows like standup, theater, and art exhibits, plus a color run—for everyone to enjoy.  The Post and Courier
  • A Charleston nonprofit is hosting the third International Consulate Weekend at the Scottish Rite Building in West Ashley to help immigrants get passports, birth certificates and voting paperwork—officials from Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Spain, the Dominican Republic, Brazil and Ecuador will provide services. The free event lasts two days and expects nearly 5,000 people while offering food, health checks and additional resources.  ABC 4 News

CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities booked Antonio Everette Hipp Jr., 31, at Al Cannon Detention Center on March 4th on charges of attempted murder and possession of a weapon in connection with the December 8th, 2023 assault on Reid Street that left one person with stab wounds and another with gunshot injuries following an altercation with Tiquan Deontae Washington.  My TV Charleston
  • A Moncks Corner man, 31-year-old (John Joseph Techman), was arrested on March 12 for distributing child sexual abuse material and faces five counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, with each count carrying up to 10 years in prison.  ABC 4 News
  • Mikal Mahdi, who was sentenced to death for killing an off-duty Orangeburg police officer in 2004, filed a stay of execution and faces execution on April 11 if his request is not granted — making him the fifth inmate set for execution since the death penalty resumed last fall.  Live 5 News
  • North Charleston police located the vehicle linked to a fatal hit-and-run on I-526 near Virginia Avenue on Monday morning that killed 56-year-old William Bennett of Summerville when an 18-wheeler driver was struck after leaving his truck on the Don Holt Bridge at 7:45 a.m.—authorities said the driver is cooperative as the investigation continues.  My TV Charleston

  • Fleet Landing is hosting a pop-up series called Friends of Our Fish to teach guests about local seafood & share tips from Andrew Jones of Bird Island Oyster Co. The event will take place tomorrow from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at 186 Concord Street & a free pint from Lowtide Brewing comes with each half-dozen oysters served.  Count On 2

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Charleston County School District is holding a community meeting at 6 p.m. at Burke High School to gather feedback on using a one percent sales tax for facility upgrades—such as new buildings, renovations, or expansions—to its schools under the Phase VI capital program.  Count On 2
