CRIME NEWS

  • Charleston County Coroner's Office identified victim Cheryl Gaydos, 47, found on Saturday, March 29 at her apartment in West Ashley after injuries from an assault—authorities arrested her boyfriend Jayme Ryan McKinney, 44, on Tuesday and charged him with murder.  ABC 4 News
  • Brunswick County Sheriff James Woodley said he never advocated for commuting Mikal Mahdi’s death sentence (contrary to prior court filings) and distanced himself from a 2011 affidavit that once supported the inmate’s defense. Mahdi remains on death row and will face a firing squad April 11 if neither the state Supreme Court nor the governor intervenes.  The Post and Courier

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ranky Tanky will perform at Charleston Music Hall on April 4 with doors opening at 7 p.m. and the show starting at 8 p.m. — Vocalist Charlton Singleton said the hometown show is special as the band performs classic favorites and new tracks from their upcoming album.  Charleston City Paper
  • The Lowcountry Cajun Festival will take place on Saturday, April 12, from 12 to 6 p.m. at James Island County Park—it will feature live Zydeco music, authentic Cajun and Creole cuisine and a Crawfish Eating Contest.  ABC 4 News
  • Festival Hall will host immersive art shows this summer as Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience and Beyond Monet: The Immersive Experience begin on July 11. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bipartisan lawmakers are proposing a bill that will require autism awareness training for all first responders—police, firefighters, and EMS—to help them handle interactions with neurodivergent individuals safely. The measure passed unanimously in the Judiciary Committee and may go to the House Floor for debate later today.  ABC 4 News
  • State lawmakers introduced a bill that will require autism training for first responders, including police, firefighters and EMS workers. Rep. Kathy Landing, a sponsor of the law (which passed unanimously in the House Judiciary Committee), said it may be debated today.  My TV Charleston
  • State senators introduced a resolution Wednesday to remove Treasurer Curtis Loftis after a probe found a $1.8 billion accounting error. The Senate will hold a removal hearing on April 21 at the State House—where Loftis will have time to defend himself.  Live 5 News
