- ➤ Today, Chris Ruder revived Spikeball at Marion Square in downtown Charleston and handed out official sets to local park-goers, inviting them to leave their screens behind for outdoor play. - ➤ The Junior League of Charleston is hosting its Spring Diaper Drive from April 5th to 13th to help families get the diapers they need by collecting donations at local drop-off bins and online. Benefit nights at restaurants and a diaper discount promotion today at The Wine Bar from 6 p.m. to midnight have already exceeded the $1,500 goal—though more help is needed as only 70% of requests have been met. - ➤ South Carolina's highest court rejected Mikal Mahdi's final appeal on Monday, clearing the way for his execution by firing squad on April 11 at 6 p.m. at Broad River Correctional Institution—he admitted to killing an off-duty police officer in a 2004 ambush. ABC 4 News
- ➤ Curtis Alan Smith was convicted on April 4 for a 2020 homicide on Spruill Avenue and now faces life without parole — he was found guilty of murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and desecration of human remains. ABC 4 News

- ➤ Between April 7 and April 12, 1861, plans in Charleston led to the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter that started the Civil War—Confederate forces blocked a Federal ship from resupplying the fort while orders from leaders sparked a battle lasting 34 hours in which no one was seriously hurt. - ➤ Dorchester School District 2 held a meeting Monday evening at Sand Hill Elementary School in Summerville to update community members on plans for a new DD2 elementary school in The Ponds area. Officials said the district secured funding, hired contractors, and obtained permits due to population growth and is now waiting for land to be deeded so construction can begin soon — inviting public input at every step. - ➤ Lowcountry residents are preparing to file both personal and business taxes before the May 1 deadline. Doug Snyder, a local CPA and board member of the South Carolina Association of CPAs, spoke on Good Morning Charleston to share tips on deductions and proper paperwork. ABC 4 News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Construction crews began adding permanent 4′-5′ bike lanes on Monday along Coleman Boulevard near Shem Creek—lanes on the Shem Creek Bridge between Pelzer Drive and Mill Street and 1.5 miles of continuous bike lanes from Houston Northcutt to Pherigo Street are part of the project. Town officials said overnight lane closures on Coleman Boulevard from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m. are expected while peak hours remain open, and work will finish by July 24. Count On 2
- ➤ TSA spokesman Mark Howell said that starting May 7, passengers must use a Real ID or another acceptable form of ID to fly domestically and internationally as well as enter federal or military facilities. Howell urged travelers with future flights to obtain the compliant ID now to avoid delays — he noted that the process requires an in-person visit at DMV — and stressed checking specific document requirements.
