GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Carolina Rep. Bill Taylor's hands free cellphone use bill passed the House on April 9 by an 85 to 25 vote after he warned that the state could lose up to 50 million dollars in highway funding if it did not join other states in banning drivers from holding phones. The bill lets drivers use phones with Bluetooth devices or in a cradle, fines first offenses 100 dollars, and gives police a period of six months to issue warnings; it will now move to the Senate.  ABC 4 News
  • The Charleston Police Department launched its DNA Laboratory on April 9—attended by police and city officials at a ribbon cutting. The lab began accepting evidence in March and will boost forensic testing to support ongoing investigations.  City of Charleston
  • Charleston County approved a multi-million-dollar plan to widen Limehouse Bridge on Johns Island for an eight-foot-wide path that will let cyclists and pedestrians travel to downtown Charleston—crews may begin work soon with completion expected in four years.  ABC 4 News
  • Mayor William Cogswell lauded progress in development and infrastructure in his first State of the City address on Tuesday night, highlighting projects like the Sumar Street redevelopment in West Ashley and a tax-increment financing district for Union Pier. He said road repairs remain a top priority for his administration—along with further public safety improvements—to bring meaningful change to the city.  Charleston City Paper

  • Dr. David Geier explained a study that shows more screen time is linked to a higher risk of insomnia when he appeared on Good Morning Charleston yesterday. He said the study shows that using screens for long periods can make it harder for people to sleep.  My TV Charleston

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Dockside Condominium residents in downtown Charleston hired lawyers after a city-mandated evacuation in February over potential structural issues forced them to leave their homes. They seek answers as move-out is set to begin on April 14 and are asking anyone who lived or worked there to share details.  ABC 4 News

  • Jessica Pegula beat Sofia Kenin with a 6-3, 7-5 win on April 6 to secure her first clay-court title at the Credit One Charleston Open. Her victory boosted her to No. 3 on the WTA Tour and she celebrated on Daniel Island — drawing a large crowd at Credit One Stadium.  The Daniel Island News
