CRIME NEWS

  • North Charleston police arrested three suspects—Devontay McNeil, Sentel McNeil, and Sean Ellison—after a shooting on Raddison Lane on Monday at 2:30 p.m., with two people injured and taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening treatment while the suspects face charges including attempted murder and assault and battery.  Count On 2
  • Russell Laffitte, the former Hampton banker and alleged co-conspirator with convicted killer Alex Murdaugh, pleaded guilty on Monday to six federal charges of bank and wire fraud—he will serve a five-year sentence after crediting 13 months in prison—evidence showed he and Murdaugh misappropriated $3.7 million from legal clients.  Charleston City Paper
  • Former deputy Emily Pelletier faced trial on April 15 for three counts of reckless homicide after a 2022 incident on Savannah Highway in which she allegedly sped through a stop sign while responding to a stalled vehicle call that resulted in the death of three women—prosecutors say the crash occurred on a dark, rural road.  The Post and Courier

HEALTH NEWS

  • MUSC will begin planning and building a new comprehensive cancer hospital in Charleston—located on the site where the Rutledge Tower annex, energy plant and parking currently stand—while a new medical office building at 334 Calhoun Street is set to finish in 2028; the project will benefit from $15M in funds approved by South Carolina legislators and MUSC's board, and the hospital is expected to complete in 2030.   Charleston Regional Business Journal
