Good morning, Charleston. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 19th of April.
COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Since last fall when Pamplico’s IGA closed, residents have relied on a nonprofit’s twice-monthly produce deliveries from Charleston (helping to bridge a food gap) while many still drive long distances for groceries. Local groups are working on a long-term solution by planning to renovate a vacant school building into a community hub (community leaders say this may boost local food access). The Post and Courier
- ➤ Charleston is set to host the 10th Annual #Race4Wanza Doughnut Dash 5k next week to honor TyWanza Sanders, with organizers Daniel Stern and AJ Harley planning the race that starts at South Windermere and reaches a Krispy Kreme station—participants must eat donuts as part of the challenge. Registration is open and the race will end with an afterparty at Kids Garden featuring pizza and wings from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. hosted by Paisano's Pizza. ABC 4 News
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ SC Ports finished a $23M project at the Port of Charleston that lets the Wando Welch Terminal handle three mega container ships at any tide—this update helped boost March container volume by 11% and included new dredging and a toe wall for deeper harbor access. The work was completed with support from a federal grant and key partners managing design and construction. Charleston Regional Business Journal
- ➤ Barry Foy, known for a major drug bust in the 1980s, is now running a legal cannabis business called Gentlemen Smugglers — a company that sells hemp and marijuana products in eight states. The company is planning a documentary with Renee Zellweger’s firm and a podcast while it meets strict legal rules. Charleston City Paper
- ➤ Cody Callarman, a Charleston veteran who returned home from the Marine Corps, founded Carolina Dream, the county’s only local CBD and THC gummy manufacturer, after his mother found relief from pain with cannabis products — he now works to drive hemp innovation and shape future cannabis policies. Charleston City Paper
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Family, friends and coworkers gathered on April 17 to remember Cheryl Lyn Gaydos Stypula, whose body was found in her West Ashley apartment on March 29—local police report that her boyfriend has been charged with murder following repeated domestic abuse. The Post and Courier
- ➤ Authorities charged Brandon Burbage for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman at gunpoint on May 13th in a Summerville home — investigators noted he may be linked to the disappearance of Thomas Daniel Yates on the same day — and he remains in Berkeley County jail as the inquiry continues. The Post and Courier
