- ➤ The Nickel Hotel by Method Co. will have its soft opening on May 1 on King Street providing 50 luxury rooms, full kitchens, and balconies in a mix of vintage and modern design—its grand opening will follow in late spring when the rooftop bar Rosemary Rose is completed. - ➤ Charleston County coroner Bobbi Jo Oneal said 42-year-old Shinique Toussaint-Allah died from blunt force injuries when her motorcycle was hit during a U-Haul police chase on April 26th at 400 Meeting Street + authorities added that the chase also injured seven people after the truck struck pedestrians and a car. ABC 4 News
- ➤ On April 26 at 3 a.m., deputies attempted a traffic stop on a stolen 2015 Lexus near Savannah Highway and Bonanza Road in Charleston when the driver refused to comply and led to a high-speed chase exceeding 110 mph before crashing near 20 North Romney Street—after the crash the driver exited the vehicle and fired shots at bystanders—one juvenile admitted to stealing the car while a second now faces charges including attempted murder. - ➤ Charleston Southern University will break ground on a new three-story residence hall for 216 students this summer designed to mirror Barbara C. Mead Hall — the ceremonial event is scheduled for today from 10 to 10:45 a.m. beside Mead Hall, with completion planned for August 2026 for fall students. My TV Charleston
- ➤ More than 80 Charleston County students were recognized at the Coaches for Character Champ Awards ceremony held over the weekend for their community service, academic effort, and personal character. Award winners thanked their families, teachers and mentors while speakers such as college quarterbacks Cade Klubnik and Lanorris Sellers celebrated the students’ achievements — a nod to our community’s bright future. - ➤ Coastal flooding in Charleston increased after moderate water levels were seen Sunday evening and a flooding advisory was issued Monday night. National Weather Service forecaster Blair Halloway said flood events nearly tripled since 2015—insurance analyst Rob Bhatt advised residents to consider flood insurance as rising repairs add costs. - ➤ Participants can register for the Hope For The Warriors 30x30 Memorial Day Challenge presented by Owens and Minor and will take part in a free virtual wellness series—set to run from May 1 to May 30—to honor service members who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Each registrant will log at least 30 minutes of any physical activity daily and will receive weekly emails with exercise tips, healthy eating advice and mindfulness activities. The Daniel Island News
- ➤ Stella’s Homemade Ice Cream in Murrells Inlet is switching to natural substitutes and removing artificial food dyes as owner Haley King began cutting additives because of family concerns and upcoming federal plans to ban synthetic dyes to protect kids. - ➤ The South Carolina Stingrays lost 6-2 to the Orlando Solar Bears on the weekend in their best-of-seven first-round Kelly Cup Playoffs series, tying the series at 3-3 — both teams scored early and played hard throughout the game.
