  • A Smart Growth America's Dangerous by Design 2024 study found the Charleston-North Charleston metro ranked ninth among the deadliest U.S. areas for pedestrians. The study shows 147 pedestrian deaths from 2018 to 2022 + a sharp rise from 97 fatalities in the previous period from 2013 to 2017.  My TV Charleston

CRIME NEWS

  • A 54-year-old North Charleston woman was charged after her Uhaul truck drove the wrong way on Meeting Street Saturday—striking pedestrians and vehicles, which resulted in one death and at least seven injuries; authorities said she failed to stop for blue lights and was booked on multiple counts including reckless homicide.  My TV Charleston
  • Charleston police said 24-year-old Briana Cason was fatally shot on Johnson Street on April 27—officers heard the gunshots while patrolling the area around 8:30 p.m.  ABC 4 News
  • On Sunday night, Briana Cason—a 24-year-old Charleston woman—was fatally shot downtown after an altercation escalated to gunfire, and officers who heard several shots responded as the investigation continues.  Count On 2
  • A 16-year-old was arrested after a Sunday early morning shooting near Johnson Street when local officers heard 10-12 gunshots and found a teen victim with a gunshot wound taken to a nearby hospital for non-life-threatening care—he faces charges of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, two counts of first-degree assault and battery, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.  Count On 2

  • Historic Pine Tree Hotel and its adjacent Skeeta Beach Lounge on Mosquito Beach are being restored with a new 1.25 million dollar grant from the Mellon Foundation — the funds will fix damage from a fire three years ago. The project is set to finish within two years — a step that preserves an important part of local Black history.  ABC 4 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Volunteers from Folly Beach Turtle Watch found the first loggerhead nest Tuesday morning — signaling that sea turtle nesting began earlier than expected this year. Biologist Michelle Pate explained that warmer winter conditions likely prompted the early start — and asked residents to turn off lights at night to protect the turtles.  My TV Charleston

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Zillow’s forecast says that U.S. home prices will drop 1.9% over the next year—more homes for sale and high mortgage rates are a key factor. In South Carolina, many metro areas may see lower prices as Charleston homes—costing over $572,000—are expected to drop about 0.3% while the state average remains near $298,029.  Charleston City Paper
