EDUCATION NEWS

  • Since 2008, First Tee of Greater Charleston has taught golf and life skills to over 22,000 kids aged five to 18 through programs on course, at school, and in the community that build confidence and social skills. Daniel Island School is starting its school program with local help and registration for summer clinics opens May 5-11—offering youth a chance to learn both the game and important life lessons.  The Daniel Island News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local leaders met at Reality Check 2.0 on April 30 to plan affordable housing, public transit improvements, and new partnerships in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester Counties. Hanahan Mayor Christie Rainwater said planning will continue to address the Lowcountry’s expected growth of 270 thousand residents by 2045 — a target that calls for smart transit and walkable development — as they focus on sustainable change.  ABC 4 News
  • The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles warns residents about scam texts that claim overdue toll fees and possible license suspension. The texts include fake website links (not matching the official SCDMV site) and residents are urged to delete them and report any received messages.  ABC 4 News
  • South Carolina lawmakers are working to pass a hate crime law named for Senator Clementa C. Pinckney before the session ends on May 8, with Representative Wendell Gilliard urging a floor vote this week. Senator Deon Tedder said the Senate will consider two similar bills and will schedule a debate soon—if no action is taken, the law will not be adopted this session.  ABC 4 News
  • The South Carolina Council on Competitiveness’ Spring Summit started this week in downtown Charleston—70 speakers and tech demos showcased advances in robotics, battery manufacturing and recycling. Leaders said the event will bring experts and educators together to launch a new artificial intelligence curriculum in high schools this fall.  ABC 4 News
  • Emanuel AME Church shooting survivor Jennifer Pinckney is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to review a lawsuit that claims Meta’s algorithm pushed extremist content—her family argues that the design helped radicalize shooter Dylann Roof and spread hate online.  The Post and Courier

HEALTH NEWS

  • Taylor Fresh Foods recalled 500 units of Trader Joe's Sesame Miso Salad with Salmon due to a packaging error that replaced crispy onions with parmesan cheese, which could cause an adverse reaction for consumers with a milk allergy. The affected product, with a Use By Date of either April 28 or April 29, was sold in South Carolina and 17 other states—anyone with a milk allergy should discard it immediately.  News Radio 94.3 WSC

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • City leaders and developer Edens will break ground next week on the Ashley Landing revitalization project in West Ashley, which will create a new town center with shops, improved roads, storm water retention, and affordable housing. The ground-breaking is set for Wednesday, May 7 at 7 a.m.—the project was approved in September 2024 and is one of West Ashley’s largest investments to date—promising fresh growth for the community.  ABC 4 News
