COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local leaders and community partners kicked off the Ashley Landing project in West Ashley as officials plan to transform a vacant mall into a 32-acre site with retail, dining, multi-family units, townhomes and greenspace. The development, with future street names honoring Lowcountry figures, will see its first phase open (late 2026) and full completion (2027).  Count On 2

CRIME NEWS

  • After 18-year-old Jaiden Anderson was arrested on April 29 for carrying a loaded gun at Philip Simmons High School, the Berkeley County School District started a pilot of random mobile weapons screening to catch any other weapons on campus—officials say the program may expand to other schools if it works.  The Daniel Island News
  • The county coroner's office identified Brianna Nelson and Travis Wright as the victims of a domestic-related shooting in North Charleston—Nelson died from a gunshot wound off Ward Street and Wright later took his own life on Midland Park Road as police continue investigating.  My TV Charleston

CULTURE NEWS

  • Piccolo Spoleto Festival will run from May 23 to June 8 and features over 700 free or low-cost shows that highlight local art, music, and performance—bringing creative talent and life-changing experiences to the community. Many local artists credit the festival with opening doors for new projects and opportunities, a tradition that began decades ago.  The Daniel Island News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Damond Howard, a visual arts teacher and esports coach at Fort Dorchester High School, has earned high praise from students and administrators for starting an esports club that builds leadership and academic skills. The club now has a waiting list of more than 20 students—each meeting strict eligibility requirements—and their success in tournaments shows how the program is changing school life.  Count On 2

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lowcountry Land Trust permanently protected the 35-acre Holly Grove parcel in Ravenel, expanding the Caw Caw Interpretive Center with 2,300 feet of water frontage and 850 feet of highway frontage. The project, funded with $2.2 million from Charleston County’s Greenbelt Program and CCPRC, may offer a paddlecraft launch and improved trail access in the future—ensuring long-term conservation of vital habitat.  Charleston Regional Business Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Wednesday, residents needed a REAL ID to fly domestically or enter federal buildings, and DMV wait times grew longer at larger offices. Some locals expressed mixed feelings about the extra security measure while officials advised checking online for shorter lines before visiting — each customer’s experience varied.  ABC 4 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Ben Shelton from Johns Island suffered life-threatening injuries after a freak play and spent three days in intensive care—he has now returned to the baseball field at St. John's High to play with his brother during his senior year. He also went on a mission trip to Peru where he felt a healing change that boosted his comeback.  ABC 4 News
