COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Lowcountry Food Bank announced Monday it received a grant from Boeing to boost food security in rural and coastal areas. The grant allowed the bank to purchase over 110,000 pounds of local food and support 12 school pantries with more than 36,000 pounds of supplies—helping local families and farmers.  ABC 4 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Alpha Sheet Metal Works will expand its Ladson facility in Charleston County by adding 24,000 square feet (a $3.7 million investment expected to create 14 new jobs). County officials and local leaders praised the planned expansion (seen as a boost to the advanced manufacturing sector) as a sign of strong, homegrown business growth.  Count On 2
  • Charleston-based Bittermilk is growing its cocktail mixer empire with bold flavors and unique products including Tippleman’s syrups and canned cocktails under Drinkmanship—led by a couple with local roots. The company will build a second facility in Ravenel to meet rising demand.  Charleston Regional Business Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • In Belton, two 24-year-old parents were arrested and charged after their six-month-old baby was severely injured by a field rat that attacked her in their single-wide home Friday morning—authorities reported that her twin also had bite marks and that all three children were taken into state custody.  ABC 4 News
  • The Charleston County Coroner identified 37-year-old Janet Crouch as the victim of a Sunday evening shooting on Hollywood Drive in West Ashley—she was found with an apparent gunshot wound shortly after 8:00 p.m. and police are investigating a targeted attack.  My TV Charleston

ECONOMY NEWS

  • An industrial metal company said it will invest $3.7M in Charleston County to boost its operations— the investment is expected to strengthen local manufacturing.  Live 5 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Over the past weekend, the Charleston Fire Department started a new 1323 schedule that lets firefighters work one day and take three days off—giving them 72 hours to rest. The change keeps their work week at 56 hours but may lead to a future move to a 42-hour week—improving recovery time for our firefighters.  ABC 4 News
  • Stanley Davis has taken charge at the Sheriff's Al Cannon Detention Center and implemented new measures to improve inmate safety and health—aggressive searches, air filtration, and updated medical care practices have reduced contraband and raised the standard of care. He continues to address challenges of low staffing and overcrowding as he builds on over 100 days of progress.  The Post and Courier
