- ➤ On April 26, officers chased a U-Haul truck that later crashed near Meeting—Reid streets, leaving one person dead and seven injured as 911 audio captured the chaotic scene. The Post and Courier
- ➤ Becky Hill, the former Colleton County clerk of court, was arrested and now faces four felony charges—perjury, obstruction of justice and misconduct in office—for allegedly using her position to promote her book and mishandling bonus funds. Former Attorney General Charlie Condon said her charges are unlikely to affect Alex Murdaugh's chance for a retrial, as the jury tampering claims were not included. My TV Charleston

- ➤ James Island artist Mary Edna Fraser enjoys the clear sound of Circular Congregational Church at 150 Meeting St and will lead her band Lime and the Coconuts in a free Music at Noon show on May 26—part of the Piccolo Spoleto Festival. - ➤ Hometown chef Shuai Wang of Jackrabbit Filly and King BBQ is competing on Bravo’s Top Chef in Toronto as Charleston foodies cheer him on each Thursday night. Wang said his teamwork helped him avoid a costly mistake on set—he accidentally tossed another chef’s ingredients—and his restaurants have seen a surge in visitors from across the country. - ➤ Piccolo Spoleto Festival will begin on May 23 outside City Hall with music, speeches and special performances, as noted by director Scott Watson. - ➤ Gibbes Museum of Art will open the exhibition, Picturing Freedom: Harriet Tubman and the Combahee River Raid on May 23 to show Pulitzer-winning historian Dr. Edda Fields-Black’s book about Tubman’s role in freeing 756 enslaved people during a key Civil War raid. The exhibit—guest curatored by Dr. Vanessa Thaxton-Ward and featuring local photographer J. Henry Fair—will display art, artifacts, and a video that bring South Carolina history to life. - ➤ Veteran journalist Kevin Sack will release his book, Mother Emanuel: Two Centuries of Race, Resistance and Forgiveness in One Charleston Church, on June 3 to mark the anniversary of the 2015 Emanuel AME Church massacre. He spent 10 years gathering over 175 interviews and hundreds of documents—presenting a detailed account of Charleston’s history and its message of forgiveness. Charleston City Paper
