- ➤ On May 13th, Eric Benn, a descendant of Hephzibah Jenkins Townsend, returned a silver communion chalice to the Edisto Island Museum+the artifact once belonged to the church she helped build for enslaved worshippers. The nine-inch chalice, marked with a lion passant to signal its purity, had been hidden during the Civil War+and passed down through the family until its rededication. The Post and Courier
- ➤ Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park will mark the 249th anniversary of the Battle of Sullivan's Island on June 28 with events including musket and cannon firing demos, history talks, kids’ activities and a living history reenactment of Sergeant Jasper retrieving the fort’s flag. The programs run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the site fee is waived for the day — a schedule set to honor this historic battle — ensuring a full day of commemorative events. ABC 4 News

- ➤ The Nature Conservancy bought Chelsea Plantation for $32M to stop new development and protect wildlife and water quality—local groups had pressed to save the 2,737-acre site from change. The land will be placed under a conservation easement before it is transferred to the state Forestry Commission. Charleston Regional Business Journal

- ➤ US Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson will visit the Lowcountry on September 2 at the Gaillard Center to discuss her memoir, LOVELY ONE — the event starts at 7:30 p.m. and will be moderated by Judge Richard Gergel, with tickets available starting at $29.25 and signed copies sold on-site. - ➤ The Historic Charleston Foundation held a Future of Responsible Tourism forum Tuesday in Charleston as the City of Charleston, Explore Charleston, and Bloomberg Associates work to create a new tourism management plan. Mayor Cogswell said the nearly decade-old plan will be revised to balance visitor growth with residents’ needs—community input will be gathered over the next six to eight months before recommendations are made this fall. - ➤ The Charleston County Sheriff's Office updated on Tuesday that Animal Control deputies checked a Johns Island property on May 15 after citizens reported finding 25 healthy dogs in outdoor crates. The owner fully cooperated and moved the animals to proper housing—no charges have been filed. ABC 4 News
- ➤ The South Carolina Department of Transportation is asking for public input on a proposed bridge replacement project on River Road in Johns Island—residents can share feedback on impacts to natural resources, historic sites, detours, and costs via an online survey open until June 13.
