- ➤ Lowcountry animal shelters are busy as kitten season arrives—staff report higher kitten intakes—and officials encourage residents to consider adoption. Live 5 News
- ➤ Summerville held its third annual Ride of Silence on May 28th to honor pedestrians and cyclists injured or killed on roadways—participants began the ride at 6:10 p.m. at Godwin’s Beer Hall and helped raise funds for a program to provide reflective vests. ABC 4 News
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Charleston’s private gardens will open to the public for self-guided tours on May 31 in Downtown and on June 7 in Old Village at Mount Pleasant. (Online registration is required) (Detailed maps, addresses, and parking instructions will be emailed to registered guests in mid-May.) Count On 2
- ➤ Harvard University settled a 15-year fight by agreeing to give 175-year-old photos of enslaved people — showing Renty and his daughter Delia — to the International African American Museum in South Carolina. The museum worked with descendant Tamara Lanier to share their full story as part of a legal settlement that included a financial deal. Count On 2
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Folly Beach installed a low-cost water level sensor at Folly River Park to help city officials watch for floods and keep people safe. The sensor, funded by federal grants and proven useful during the Nor’easter in December 2023, will alert emergency services—ensuring quick responses when water rises. ABC 4 News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Stephanie Ganaway-Pasley (a civil mediator and past mayoral candidate) and Chris Emde (a small business owner) were elected to the North Charleston City Council in a special Tuesday election, filling two of three seats left vacant after resignations amid a federal corruption probe. Charleston City Paper
- ➤ Charleston city and county officials are working on a plan to add a lane on Maybank Highway on Johns Island to ease heavy traffic while saving large live oak trees — the idea may work by taking control of part of the road from the state. Mayor Cogswell brought up the plan on May 27 and will meet with council members today — the county estimates the project could cost about $15 million although funding is not yet decided.
