COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Charleston Animal Society has partnered with Berkeley County to manage the Berkeley Animal Center and ease overcrowding, with the transition set to begin on July 1. County staff and volunteers will join the society as employees plus the center will adopt updated branding and expanded animal care programs for the growing area.  The Post and Courier
  • Events all month will mark the 10th anniversary of the Emanuel AME Church shooting on June 17, 2015. Today the church hosts a pre-publication sneak-peak event for Pulitzer-winning journalist Kevin Sack’s new book — later events include a movie premiere, a community forum, and remembrance services through June 28.  The Post and Courier

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A house fire on Bonanza Road injured two people Saturday when fire crews responded at 10:45 a.m.—a man was treated and a firefighter was taken for evaluation while officials controlled the flames in about 20 minutes and are still investigating the cause.  Count On 2

CRIME NEWS

  • In June 2024, 33-year-old inmate Jordan Bell died by hanging in his cell at Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center after jail staff missed warning signs of suicide risk—SLED reported no criminal charges will be filed.  The Post and Courier

CULTURE NEWS

  • Allen University honored the Emanuel 9 by unveiling busts at its Boeing Institute on Civility to remember the nine church members killed in a racially motivated massacre on June 17 — the tribute comes weeks before the shooting's 10th anniversary. Family members and students view the display as a way to keep the victims' legacies alive as the community reflects on its past.  ABC 4 News
  • A review of Spoleto Festival USA’s production of 'The Turn of the Screw' at Dock Street Theatre said the opera brings a chilling twist to Henry James’s ghost story with strong performances and creative stage design — the set’s eerie details enhance the haunting atmosphere. Future shows are scheduled for June 3 at 7 p.m. and June 6 at 8 p.m.  Charleston City Paper
  • The Vijay Iyer Trio featuring Linda May Han Oh and Tyshawn Sorey will perform tomorrow at 7 p.m. at College of Charleston Sottile Theater as part of Spoleto Festival USA — marking their group debut with a spontaneous show that has no setlist. The trio plans to let the music evolve naturally as they build on their mutual trust and shared artistry.  Charleston City Paper

  • Charleston Fire is holding a child safety checkpoint to help parents protect their children. Officials say the checkpoint will offer key safety tips and inspections to boost community awareness.  Live 5 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Charleston RiverDogs swept the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers in a Saturday doubleheader at the Joe by winning 5-1 and 5-3 and sparking a massive toilet paper celebration that covered the stadium—fans enjoyed a lively Mischief Night. The wins gave Charleston a 3-2 series lead.  ABC 4 News
