CRIME NEWS

  • A man was found guilty of the 2022 North Charleston murder and sentenced to life — the court provided a verdict that ends a long-standing case.  Live 5 News
  • Two men now face state charges for unauthorized alcohol sales, narcotics, and weapons violations—warrants issued on June 6 followed a multi-agency raid at an unsanctioned nightclub on Highway 78 at 3 a.m. on June 1.  Count On 2
  • Following a multi-agency sting and ICE raid at the Alamo nightclub on Sunday in Charleston County, community members and immigrant rights advocates criticized Sheriff Carl Ritchie’s decision to reinstate the 287(g) program (66 undocumented individuals were arrested and five faced criminal charges) amid fears of targeted enforcement.  ABC 4 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today's event at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Charleston starts at 7:30 p.m. and features Classical Pride Charleston—a Piccolo Spoleto event that celebrates queer composers and promotes equality amid rising anti-trans bills. Music director Ryan Pagels said key pieces like Copland's "Appalachian Spring" will honor community history, with plans to commission a local queer composer next year.  Charleston City Paper

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • South Carolina leaders and environmental groups have raised concerns over a federal review that may reopen offshore drilling along the coast despite a 2020 ban intended to protect the state’s beaches and tourism—officials urged residents to share feedback during the BOEM public comment period through June 16. Local representatives stress that removing the ban could risk the area’s clean waterways and economic vitality.  Charleston City Paper

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State transportation sales tax money is funding a flyover project to ease traffic on U.S. Highway 17 at Main Road in West Ashley—project leaders have finalized design plans and utility relocations—and the project is expected to complete in September 2028. A drainage project will also close part of a James Island road from this weekend through November.  Charleston City Paper
  • The Awendaw-McClellanville Fire Department said last Thursday that they addressed a bed bug infestation at two fire stations—Fire Station 2 in Awendaw and Fire Station 4 in McClellanville. Staff were temporarily relocated—while emergency response remained unaffected in the areas.  ABC 4 News
