CRIME NEWS

  • On June 20, a 34-year-old man from Charleston County named Forrest Young Putnam was charged with insurance fraud dating back to 2020, which includes obtaining property under false pretenses, forgery, and computer crime over $10,000—he used COVID-19 benefits he was not eligible for and was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center with the case to be prosecuted by the Attorney General's Office.  ABC 4 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Preservation Society of Charleston won a state preservation award—given on June 18—for its Mapping Charleston’s Black Burial Grounds Project that maps over 150 cemeteries to mark likely Black burial sites. The project went live in October and aims to protect these historic sites amid rapid growth—boosting community awareness and guiding future efforts.  The Post and Courier
  • Tomorrow, Charleston will mark Carolina Day with a service at St. Michael’s Church at 10 a.m., a community gathering at Washington Park at 11 a.m., a parade from Washington Park at 11:30 a.m. ending at White Point Garden, and a wreath-laying ceremony at noon to honor the 249th anniversary of the Battle of Sullivan’s Island. On Sullivan’s Island, Fort Moultrie will host a free family festival with historical reenactments and demonstrations plus a RiverDogs game at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park will feature Revolutionary War interpreter activities and a drone light show.  Charleston City Paper

EDUCATION NEWS

  • College of Charleston has launched a new School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics and named Steve Schreiner as its dean — an experienced academic leader from Manhattan University with over 20 years in higher education. The new school aims to strengthen Charleston’s growing STEM workforce.  Charleston Regional Business Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A 66-acre property on Johns Island is now under protection as Lowcountry Land Trust placed a conservation easement on the land to set the stage for a new Charleston County park. The park will offer water access, wildlife support, and recreation, with funding from grants+donations and local groups.  Charleston Regional Business Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jacob Dalton Bloomer was fired from North Charleston Police Department on April 21 for repeated policy violations, including a vehicle pursuit incident, and was hired as a deputy with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office on June 13. Sheriff’s spokesperson Lexi Douglas said the department feels confident in his ability to serve and protect the community — though Bloomer declined to comment.  The Post and Courier
