  • A Second Chance opened a new transitional home for women in North Charleston that will allow five residents to move in on Aug. 1—offering safe housing and case management to help rebuild their lives. The July 9 event included local leaders and executive director Patsy Gardner, who said the home fills a needed gap in reentry resources.  The Post and Courier

  • BermudAir will expand its Charleston-Bermuda service from once‑weekly to twice weekly starting Aug. 7 through October — replacing Saturday flights with Thursday and Sunday departures; the schedule will include departures at 3:15 p.m. from Bermuda and 5:45 p.m. from Charleston.  My TV Charleston

  • A Goose Creek man faces over 70 animal cruelty charges after police seized numerous dogs from his property—authorities said the investigation revealed widespread animal abuse violations.  Live 5 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Philip Simmons High will begin the 2025-2026 school year with new principal LaTanya Butler replacing Chris Buchholz who left for Cane Bay High, and Cainhoy Elementary will have interim principal Cynthia Bise after LaWanda Glears retired. Berkeley County School District approved a $485.7 million budget that raises first-year teacher salaries by $4,320 and adds a 2% cost-of-living adjustment for staff — with no tax increase for residents.  The Daniel Island News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Charleston’s Forest Acres Phase Two Drainage Improvement Project was honored as South Carolina Project of the Year in the Environment category by the American Public Works Association. The completed project reduced flooding in West Ashley neighborhoods by installing new drainage channels, box culverts, and piped drainage systems along key roads + improving stormwater flow.  ABC 4 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sullivan’s Island Town Council is working on a flood plan to help protect the island from sea level rise and flooding—this plan includes using natural resources, raising parts of the Ben Sawyer Causeway, and suggesting personal rain gardens and living shorelines for homes. The final plan will be presented for council review on August 19th.  Count On 2

HEALTH NEWS

  • South Carolina hospitals will start losing payments for Medicaid patients in 2028 as the state phased payment program is rolled back — the cut is projected to reach $2.4 billion by 2043 and could force rural hospitals to reduce services. Hospital leaders plan to meet with state officials to address the potential move to transfer costs to other patients.  My TV Charleston
