CRIME NEWS

  • After taking over the Berkeley campus, the Charleston Animal Society rescued 35 dogs from a Goose Creek property to aid animal cruelty investigations using veterinary forensics—an effort that supports law enforcement—while a temporary custody hearing will be held Friday to decide if the dogs will remain under the shelter’s care as adoption events run through Sunday.  ABC 4 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents and local leaders in Awendaw are concerned about a proposed housing development near the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge that could harm the local environment. Pulte Home Company seeks permits from the S.C. Department of Environmental Services for a project of over 100 homes (comments are accepted until July 23).  Charleston City Paper

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dorchester County is holding a public meeting to gather input on a $181 million expansion of Dorchester Road. County officials will use the feedback to guide planning of the widening project scheduled for later this year.  Live 5 News
  • Charleston International Airport broke ground on a $105 million West Gates Expansion on July 14 — adding 40,000 square feet of passenger space and four new gates. The project will boost gate capacity by 15% and include retail, dining, and international arrival areas — with completion expected by the end of 2026.  Charleston Regional Business Journal
  • Dorchester County officials are holding a public meeting at Fort Dorchester High School on Tuesday at 5 p.m. to get feedback on plans to widen 5.6 miles of Dorchester Road for growing traffic and improved pedestrian safety. Officials stated the project has a $181 million budget — with design alternatives that could double costs — and will share preliminary plans in spring before construction begins around 2029.  ABC 4 News
