COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The City of Charleston approved a multi-million dollar investment to upgrade recreation facilities on West Ashley and Johns Island — West Ashley’s WL Stephens Aquatic Center will be rebuilt into a 28,000 square foot indoor pool and the Forest Park Playground will be replaced with a new accessible area while Johns Island will soon see its first full-scale 50,000 square foot recreation center with indoor pools, splash pads, workout rooms and sports courts. Construction will begin early summer 2026 and take 18 months to complete — city officials say the projects are the first step in a long-term plan to improve local parks. Count On 2

- ➤ Frontier Airlines will start non-stop flights from Charleston International Airport to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport on Oct. 9—operating twice weekly to offer more low-cost travel options. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ North Charleston police arrested 42-year-old Derrell Chandler after he attempted to hide and ingest a small baggie during a jail intake search at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center, following a search near Econo Lodge where officers detected a marijuana smell and found a powdery substance in his sock that tested positive for cocaine and a blue rock-like substance from his underwear that tested positive for fentanyl — he now faces charges of possession of fentanyl for more than two grains, possession of cocaine and furnishing contraband. - ➤ A commercial fisherman from the McClellanville area was sentenced on July 22 to one year and a day for lying to federal agents and catching hundreds of pounds above allowed limits for snowy grouper and gray tilefish—court records show he had told his son to catch as many fish as possible. - ➤ A 37-year-old man identified as Pierre Da'Quawn Ste'von Rashaad Greene-Smalls was arrested on July 16 after a traffic stop and the subsequent search of his home on Cotton Hope Lane in Summerville revealed over 400 grams of methamphetamine, 28 grams of crack cocaine and 200 grams of cocaine—he remains in custody at Hill-Finklea Detention Center. - ➤ Naval Information Warfare Center Atlantic contributed a $2.1B economic impact in SC in FY24 while supporting nearly 8,000 jobs in Charleston, Dorchester, and Berkeley counties. It boosted local cybersecurity — accounting for 50% of its workforce — and partnered with local universities and companies to expand workforce development in the Lowcountry. - ➤ Charleston County Schools launched a real-time bus tracking app yesterday that lets parents see their child's bus location minute-by-minute + the tool gives added peace of mind. FOX Charleston

- ➤ The South Carolina Department of Transportation has been paving downtown Charleston roads overnight from July 20 until July 26—affecting Morris, Ashley, Race and Maranda Holmes Streets—with work from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., so drivers are advised to take alternate routes as reduced speeds and parking restrictions may cause delays. - ➤ North Charleston Police Department welcomed its new tracking dog Koda today—a German Shorthaired Pointer certified through the International Police Working Dog Association—who will help locate missing vulnerable adults, missing children, and non-violent offenders. Koda will also set a friendly presence at community events to build trust between law enforcement and the public with support from the County Sheriff’s Office and executive staff. Count On 2
