CRIME NEWS
- ➤ North Charleston police arrested 31-year-old Joshua Richards on Wednesday for shooting a man several times at Legends Apartments on Dorchester Road on July 13—officers applied a tourniquet to the victim’s leg wound before taking him to a nearby hospital. Count On 2
- ➤ On Tuesday, a federal grand jury in the Midlands indicted two California brothers on drug charges after authorities seized 156 pounds of fentanyl worth $1.7 million—found during two coordinated traffic stops on July 1—that could lead to life in prison. Charleston City Paper
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ College of Charleston is building a new dormitory at 106 Coming Street—a site once used as the YWCA where civil rights leaders met and thought to hold a historic burial ground from the 1700s. The college will hold a community meeting on August 4th at 6 p.m. to share project plans and address local concerns. Count On 2
- ➤ Charleston County Schools have fully staffed all classrooms for the upcoming school year by hiring over 400 new teachers & better salaries have helped attract new educators and keep current ones, according to Superintendent Anita Huggins. The district will also expand support for 14 elementary schools with a $4 million boost for its Elevation Schools Initiative and will use a 90-day review to guide future improvements. ABC 4 News

- ➤ Forty-five-year-old Aaron Tobias Polkey returned to Charleston last year after working for nine years in Washington, D.C. to lead the Palmetto Project and has held statewide listening sessions as he announced his run for the peninsular 4th district seat on City Council on July 24—seeking new ideas to boost inclusivity and address future challenges such as potential cuts to federal health coverage. - ➤ The City of Charleston announced two major recreation projects today as part of its Parks & Recreation Master Plan funded by a $70 million bond approved in 2023; one project will rebuild the WL Stephens Recreation Center in West Ashley with new facilities including an indoor pool, therapy pool, community room, playground and sports courts, while the other will build a 50,000 square foot complex on Johns Island with an indoor pool, gym and fitness areas. The design phase was approved last week and, with contracts set for review in August and construction to begin next summer for an 18‑month timeline, public input sessions will start this fall — ensuring local priorities are addressed —.
