- ➤ Starting Sept. 1, South Carolina will ban drivers from holding their cell phones and will give warnings until Feb. 28 when fines of $100 for a first offense and $200 plus two points for repeat violations will apply—Governor Henry McMaster said the law is meant to keep drivers focused on the road. This new measure makes South Carolina the 33rd state to enforce a hands-free driving rule. Charleston City Paper
- ➤ S.C. Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver declared an education emergency in Jasper County School District and will ask the state board on Aug. 5 to take over the troubled district amid reports of financial mismanagement—signs of rising challenges in poor rural schools. A new law banning handheld phone use while driving takes effect Sept. 1—offenders will first receive a warning until Feb. 28 before fines begin. Charleston City Paper

- ➤ NeuroQuest’s research on early Alzheimer’s detection earned a $250k grant from SC Launch — CEO Jason Maxwell said the funding will support further studies to track biomarkers before symptoms appear.
