  • Two Daniel Island brothers raised $2,360.71 with a lemonade stand at Smythe Lake to support the Renee Smajstrla Memorial Fund honoring a relative who died in the July 4th Texas floods. Their parents said the successful effort shows the boys' empathy—an encouraging sign for more community support in the future.  The Daniel Island News

  • Crewdogs, a Charleston startup, offers short-term rental stays for military members, veterans and their families at prices about 20% lower than on other sites. CRIME NEWS

  • Charleston Police are seeking three suspects who allegedly broke the storage shed at Philip Simmons High School, stole spray paint and vandalized the campus with racially offensive graffiti on July 26 (including a swastika and a penis image on a school bus).  ABC 4 News

  • Minnie 'Gracie' Gadson, a 78-year-old singer from St. Helena Island, preserves ancestral Gullah spirituals by performing in historic praise houses — a practice rooted in the traditions of enslaved ancestors — and works with fellow elders to keep this cultural legacy alive.  ABC 4 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Charleston County School District said schools will start fully staffed today—meaning all teaching and support roles are filled—and officials expect full instruction for students this school year.  Live 5 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Candidates for municipal races in Charleston, Mount Pleasant, and Hollywood have begun filing to run in the November 4 election as the filing period runs from August 4 until August 18 at noon — key contests include city council seats, a commissioner of public works role in Charleston, and mayoral and council races in Mount Pleasant and Hollywood. Some candidates have already filed while others must meet residency requirements and pay filing fees to complete their applications.  Count On 2
  • On Aug. 6th, Shannon Verastequi was named Charleston’s first female postmaster during a historic ceremony at the Post Office — marking a new era in postal services. With more than 20 years of experience, she will work to improve the work environment for her employees.  ABC 4 News
