  • St. Francis Animal Center in Georgetown has become overcrowded with 193 adoptable dogs in tight kennel conditions and must euthanize some animals when they are not fit for adoption—board chair Lisa Hutto urges pet owners to spay and neuter to lower the numbers.  ABC 4 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Drivers in Charleston are urged to stop for school buses starting tomorrow after the school district reported too many drivers ignore red lights and stop arms—30 buses will use stop arm cameras to capture violations—and local law enforcement will investigate each case.  Count On 2
  • Charleston County School District Superintendent Anita Huggins talked about the upcoming 2025-2026 school year on Get 2 Know, pointing out a nearly 90% graduation rate and efforts to improve teacher retention with competitive pay — she stressed that community support and better working conditions are key to success.  Count On 2

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tropical Storm Erin has formed in the Atlantic and will become the first hurricane of the season by late Aug. 13—meteorologists expect it to strengthen into a major hurricane in less than three days as its track shifts north while moving west. Its future path remains uncertain as conditions in the Atlantic evolve.  The Post and Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Charleston Police Department received the Accreditation with Excellence Award from CALEA at its 2025 conference in Little Rock, Arkansas. This award—its eleventh in a row—confirms the department’s strong commitment to high standards and community trust.  City of Charleston
  • Some Dockside townhome owners went to federal court to ask for a court order that lets them return after being told to leave when their homes were found unsafe in February. Their lawyer said the city did not follow proper steps and provide proof of danger—while the city's lawyer maintained that officials acted to keep people safe.  Count On 2

  • A sister helped a Lowcountry couple welcome their baby after years of infertility struggles — providing essential support during a long journey. The family celebrated the newborn’s arrival and expressed heartfelt thanks for her help.  Live 5 News
