CRIME NEWS

  • A North Charleston officer stopped a speeding vehicle on Ridgebrook Drive early Friday and discovered two firearms and marijuana, with one firearm reported as stolen; Travis Brown Jr. (21) was arrested and booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center for charges of receiving stolen goods and simple possession.  Count On 2
  • Major P. Duke, 39—a Pennsylvania man accused of dumping a truck in the water near Sullivan's Island—was charged on Tuesday after his 2022 truck was pulled from about 14 feet of water near Fort Moultrie following a July 31 incident, facing charges for indecent exposure, over 500 pounds of litter, and property damage with a bond set at $2,125.  My TV Charleston

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Charleston County School District uses local tax dollars to fund improvements in facilities and classroom technology, with officials saying the plan will enhance learning across the district in the coming months—supporting future projects and upgrades.  Live 5 News
  • Charleston County School District expanded its random weapons search program to all middle schools after more than 50,000 students returned to class Tuesday as part of the first day of school. A new panic button badge system for staff will be rolled out over the next six months — training will be provided once the badges are issued.  ABC 4 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents at Breach Inlet face growing risks as rapid beach erosion exposes homes to flooding and storm surge; they urge city leaders to act quickly. City leaders met on August 12 and will review coastal stabilization options — experts warn that sea level rise and shifting inlet channels are worsening the erosion.  Count On 2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Charleston lawyer Mullins McLeod announced his 2026 gubernatorial bid in a three-minute video where he said he plans to cure a cancer of corruption in state government—his campaign comes three months after his May arrest for disorderly conduct.  Charleston City Paper
  • The Greater Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber Foundation, Dorchester County and the Town of Summerville will present the first draft of their Community Vision Plan at two public briefings next week—one in St. George on August 26 at 5:30 p.m. and one in Summerville on August 27 at 5:30 p.m.—to outline a 15-year roadmap for growth based on over 3,200 community responses.  Count On 2

HEALTH NEWS

  • DermaRite Industries recalled specific lots of hand soaps and topical products (DermaKleen antiseptic lotion soap, DermaSarra external analgesic, KleenFoam antimicrobial foam soap, and PeriGiene antiseptic cleanser) earlier this week due to contamination by dangerous bacteria Burkholderia cepacia that may cause life-threatening infections for people with weakened immune systems.
