CRIME NEWS
- ➤ North Charleston Police arrested Armeen Dushorn Deveaux on Aug. 8 after dash cam footage linked him to a July 27 vehicle break-in at Wescott Golf Club and three other break-ins — he faces charges of eight counts of breaking into a motor vehicle, three counts of unlawful firearm possession by a convicted felon, and one count of financial transaction card theft. - ➤ Musician Marcus King will host his two-day family reunion festival on Aug. 23 and Aug. 24 at Firefly Distillery in North Charleston—featuring his band, Molly Tuttle, Jamey Johnson, and Hiss Golden Messenger as they preview songs from his upcoming album Darling Blue. Charleston City Paper

- ➤ Dorchester County Emergency Management held a drop-in tour at its Emergency Operations Center at 212 Deming Way in Summerville yesterday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Community members met the emergency team—learning ways to prepare for hurricanes and other emergencies. Count On 2
- ➤ The City of Charleston began restoration of the landmark smokestacks at the St. Julian Devine Community Center, focusing on masonry repair—reinforcement and upgrades are part of the project. The work started last week and will finish in early 2026. Charleston Regional Business Journal
- ➤ Charleston County will raise parking garage rates in downtown Charleston beginning Oct. 1—Cumberland garage at 90 Cumberland St. and King and Queen garage at 85 Queen St. The new rates will change hourly charges to $1 per 20 minutes with a $24 daily max and will help cover maintenance, repairs, and credit card fees. - ➤ A Charleston firefighter, Rob Tackett, who has served for 12 years, said his thyroid cancer was found through a local screening — his diagnosis has led to calls for routine cancer tests in firefighter health benefits. The fire department will ask for these screenings to be added in next year’s budget — a change intended to better protect firefighters. Count On 2
- ➤ A study by Boston University's associate professor Jonathan Jay finds that gun violence—the leading killer of children—disproportionately harms young Black people and shows government actions have failed to address the crisis. Residents in the Lowcountry protested this weekend to support families affected by the growing violence. Charleston City Paper
