CRIME NEWS

  • On July 26, three people broke into Philip Simmons High School's maintenance building and took orange spray paint to deface a school bus with a swastika and other offensive images—police said the act did not meet hate crime rules, cleanup was finished, and no arrests have been made.  The Daniel Island News
  • Marleny Fernandez, a 44-year-old woman, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with burglary, vehicle break-in, arson, and grand larceny for a mid-August crime spree that set several cars and trash on fire across Charleston—police have set her bond at $200,000 with additional charges expected.  My TV Charleston
  • A Hollywood man was sentenced last week to 33 years after being found guilty of murdering his cousin at Pinecrest Greene apartments in West Ashley on October 30 — detectives used surveillance footage and a confession to connect him to the armed robbery and killing.  ABC 4 News
  • North Charleston police arrested 25-year-old Anisah Brown on Tuesday afternoon after detecting a strong smell of marijuana and approaching an idling vehicle near the EconoLodge on Northside Drive, where a search uncovered a backpack with over 39 grams of methamphetamine, 37 grams of fentanyl, cocaine, Xanax, marijuana and two stolen firearms.  Count On 2

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A 120-foot former US Navy torpedo vessel that had sat abandoned near a private dock on Bohicket Creek for over two years was removed Tuesday by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (in partnership with Stevens Towing) to protect sensitive coastal habitats. The vessel had leaked hazardous oil and its owner was arrested, marking a key step in cleaning up the area.  ABC 4 News

  • Rising insurance costs in the Lowcountry have led experts to advise Charleston homeowners to secure separate flood insurance and make targeted home repairs to reduce storm risks—homeowners already pay about 60% more than the national average.  My TV Charleston

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The South Carolina Ports Authority received the final $21.28M from the government to finish the $580M Charleston Harbor Deepening Project, which made the harbor 52 feet deep and will let larger container ships dock. State and federal leaders worked together on the project—ensuring Charleston stays competitive.  Charleston Regional Business Journal
  • Christopher Way was named Charleston County EMS chief on Wednesday and will take office Friday—he served as fire chief in northern Idaho since May 2020 and plans to work closely with the community as he leads emergency services. He began his career as a volunteer firefighter at 16 and is relocating to Charleston with his wife, an emergency room nurse.  ABC 4 News
