Good morning, Charleston. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 24th of August.

ECONOMY NEWS

  • South Carolina has a housing crisis as fast population growth leaves few affordable homes. In Charleston, Mayor Cogswell presented a 3,500-unit housing plan on Aug. 21 that was estimated to cost $800 million by 2031—home prices in the area nearly doubled in a decade.  Charleston City Paper

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Charleston has extended free storm parking at 99 West Edge Garage and Charleston Tech Center Garage until 9 a.m. today due to ongoing heavy rain and flooding concerns. Multiple roads are closed and further closures are expected as higher tides worsen flooding — residents are urged to stay home and avoid non-essential travel.  City of Charleston
  • Drivers traveling along North Maple Street will face nightly road closures beginning Monday, Aug. 25 as Blythe Development LLC in partnership with the town of Summerville works on the roadway extension project.
