COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Monday, the 50501 People’s Movement hosted a 'Workers Over Billionaires' event along Remount Road in Hanahan as part of over 2000 planned protests calling for fair public services and affordable housing. Later, local union reps and families joined a BBQ at the Communication Workers of America Union Hall—1269 Yeamans Hall Road.  ABC 4 News
  • On Monday, Isle of Palms saw heavy crowds as families and tourists gathered for Labor Day while parking lots filled, traffic backed up along Palm Boulevard, and restaurants stayed busy. Local business owners and residents said the event boosted the local economy and continued a cherished summer tradition despite delays from the island’s limited road system.  Count On 2

  • Today, Charleston Airport has introduced its new Families on the Fly lane to help families move through security and boarding faster for holiday travel — the service is expected to reduce delays for those traveling with children.  Live 5 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Carolina has enacted a new Hands-free And Distracted Driving Act that bans drivers from holding their phones while driving. The law—effective Sept 1—allows only hands-free or emergency use and gives drivers 180 days of warnings before a first offense incurs a $100 fine and a repeat violation brings a $200 fine plus two license points.  ABC 4 News
  • Charleston County Elections has launched training sessions for its Voter Ambassador Program to teach residents how to run voter registration drives and boost civic participation. The county holds sessions from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at 4340 Corporate Road — additional trainings are scheduled for September 11th and 24th.  ABC 4 News
  • The North Charleston Police Department completed training on new pepperball launchers that fire pepper spray-filled projectiles to safely de-escalate dangerous situations—ten officers are now using the device and the department will review its impact before wider use.  The Post and Courier
  • The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources conducted courtesy boat inspections on Monday at two Lowcountry boat landings, checking safety equipment and registration status to help boaters follow safety rules. Inspectors at Wappoo Cut Boat Landing — in Charleston County, and at Herbert Jessen Landing — in Dorchester County did not issue tickets but required fixes before boats could launch.  Count On 2
