- ➤ An off-duty North Charleston police officer, Michael Lewis, working security at a Walmart on Rivers Avenue shot David Juan Bryant on July 14 after Bryant pointed his handgun at him during a return fraud incident—state and local investigators found no proof of criminal wrongdoing and Bryant remains in custody for firearm charges. The group, which has monitored these waters for over a decade, calls for more investment in stormwater infrastructure—experts say higher rainfall in the future could worsen contamination.
