- ➤ Sylvia Wright—a North Charleston native and former teacher with 20 years of experience—announced her campaign for South Carolina Superintendent of Education yesterday. - ➤ Mayor William Cogswell met with residents Wednesday night to discuss the proposal to add a cancer research and care center to the MUSC campus—he said the city will address concerns about stormwater management and building height. The planning commission will review the update on Sept. 17 and the city council will hold public comment on Sept. 23. Count On 2
- ➤ Starting Jan. 1, Charleston officials announced that water bills will rise about 10% as costs from relocating 21 miles of water mains for a lowcountry transit project drive the increase; the additional 3% surcharge added to a 7% rate rise is expected to remain for decades—affecting monthly bills. - ➤ Charleston Fire Chief Daniel Curia was named 2025 Career Fire Chief of the Year by the Southeastern Association of Fire Chiefs at a conference in Franklin, Tennessee—he praised his team for their work and said he will focus on reducing community risk in the future. The Daniel Island News
- ➤ State Rep. Mark Smith announced yesterday that he will file a bill to raise fines and add driver’s license points for those who violate the state’s Move Over law after three troopers were struck during past traffic stops—he said the bill will also set a fixed speed reduction, require citation tracking, and call for more public safety outreach when the House reconvenes no later than January 12. - ➤ Charleston City Council voted last night to enter a design agreement with USACE for the Battery Extension project that set aside $13.3 million for its pre-construction and design phase — the council also approved $1.1 million to fund a study addressing flooding across the city. - ➤ Today the City of Charleston’s Technical Review Committee will review the Cainhoy Del Webb Phase 3 proposal for a 272-lot single-family development and the Point Hope North Residential proposal for 93 lots—each with preliminary plat and road plans. Recent design reviews approved a new medical building and deferred a storage project on Cainhoy, and a planning commission meeting on Sept. 17 will handle a road dedication request for Atlantic - St. Thomas. - ➤ Air Force veteran Dr. Sonja Ogletree Satani has announced her bid for the South Carolina House District 98 special election following incumbent Chris Murphy's retirement—she earned about 42% of the vote in 2024 and is running to boost economic growth, public education, and infrastructure in parts of Summerville and North Charleston. - ➤ A wooden sign by Daniel Island Library two weeks ago marked a proposed $1 million EMS station at the corner of Barfield and Pierce near a school and pedestrian trail, causing residents to worry about noise, safety, and property values. Councilman Brooks met with local residents and EMS Chief Michael Shirey to explain plans that include moving vehicles during school drop-off and delaying siren activation until the ambulance reaches a roundabout — steps meant to reduce disruption. - ➤ The Philip Simmons and Bishop England cross country teams competed at the 41st annual Eye Opener meet over Labor Day weekend at The Milliken Center in Spartanburg, where more than 3,700 runners took part. The Philip Simmons volleyball team, with a 12-game winning streak and one loss, played its first region game on Sept. 9 and will travel to Burke High School today—aiming to build on their strong record.
