  • Conversant Capital committed up to $300M to Bond Street REIT, a Charleston-based owner of 39 shopping centers that plans to acquire over $150M in retail assets annually and expects to close $60M in new deals this year—this investment will boost its expansion in high-growth southern markets.  Charleston Regional Business Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Mourners gathered in Marion Square Thursday night to honor conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was fatally struck by a gunshot while speaking at an outdoor event in Utah, with local authorities releasing FBI images of a person of interest—two persons who were detained and later released—and political groups planning another vigil in Summerville Saturday.  Count On 2

CULTURE NEWS

  • Arun Drummond opened his Drummond Studio Gallery at 12 Line St. on the East Side to provide a space for Black artists and others to show their work. The gallery—next to City Lights Eastside—will host its first show with artist Demetrius Bing on Oct. 10.  The Post and Courier
  • The 3rd Annual Southern Songwriter Festival started Thursday in Summerville and continues through today as local and regional musicians perform hourly in a format modeled after Nashville songwriters in the round — a free public event.  ABC 4 News

  • A county committee will study Charleston County’s transportation sales tax to decide how best to fund local transit — the group will review options and issue recommendations for future changes.  Live 5 News
  • A judge denied a request for a preliminary injunction that would have let Dockside residents return to their evacuated townhomes—citing that the 24-hour notice was fair given the risk of collapse; the homes have been empty since February.  My TV Charleston
  • The S.C. Election Commission will transfer its voter database to the U.S. Department of Justice after the state Supreme Court lifted an earlier block on the move—Gov. McMaster's office praised the ruling while state Sen. Hutto said officials are unlikely to send the data immediately until a hearing on Sept. 21.  Charleston City Paper
  • The Charleston County Sheriff's Office is hiring nearly 97 detention center officers to help keep the jail safe—Sgt. Tomyka Driscoll and Captain Kieviet Driskell said that strict rules must be met to ease staffing challenges.  ABC 4 News
  • James Island Public Service District is aiding the search for missing fire engineer Wesley Fairey, a 20-year veteran who left for vacation in Bali on Aug 15 and did not return home—officials say his friends and family await his safe return.  ABC 4 News
