COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Charleston Literary Festival founder Walter Fiederowicz and local surgeon Richard 'Duke' Hagerty drove non-lethal supplies to Ukraine’s frontlines this summer amid Russian attacks—both say their mission lifts spirits. They plan to return next year and will host a Victory for Ukraine fundraiser at the Stevenson and Co. art gallery on Queen Street in November.  The Post and Courier

CULTURE NEWS

  • H. Alexander Rich began his role as President and CEO of Gibbes Museum of Art in August and brings decades of art expertise to lead the museum’s new direction. He and his family—husband Greg, toddler son, and schnauzer—are settling into Charleston life as he works to expand the museum’s audience.  Charleston City Paper
  • A cypress tree trunk lighthouse known as Grayson’s Tree of Knowledge has stood on Heriot Street for over 60 years—planted by the Carter family after recovering the tree from a lake to mark their lumber business legacy. The landmark attracts curious visitors who appreciate its unusual history and timeless message.  The Post and Courier
  • WCBD+ is streaming a two-hour Hurricane Hugo special—Wrath to Restoration—that shows how Charleston faced and recovered from the Category 4 storm 36 years ago. The program airs today at 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. and will run on Sunday at 12 p.m. and 8 p.m.  Count On 2

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Grace Music School—a family-owned program from New York—has opened a new location next to Wando High School to expand music education during National Arts in Education Week. Co-owners John Heaphy and Grace Casey said students of all ages can enroll for lessons that build both skill and confidence.  ABC 4 News
  • Students in Charleston schools have seen new virtual mental health resources that let them quickly access counseling—officials say the program will soon expand to provide more support where needed.  Live 5 News
  • College of Charleston will host a memorial to honor an education instructor killed in an accident — officials said more details will be announced soon.  Live 5 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • North Charleston’s police chief Ron Camacho is promoting the new CrimeWatch app while challenging his team with rewards—if the app gains 2,500 subscribers he will get dunked, at 5,000 he must walk to work with weights, and at 10,000 he will shave his mustache. The department saw over 500 downloads in July and now aims to boost subscriber numbers to keep the community informed.  Count On 2
  • Charleston International Airport will deploy an AI-powered parking system that uses sensors and data analytics to guide drivers to available spots—reducing congestion and speeding parking times.  Live 5 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • South Carolina health officials confirmed the state's first human death from Eastern Equine Encephalitis in over 20 years. Officials said the case was identified recently—authorities are urging residents to use mosquito protection measures.  Live 5 News
  • South Carolina’s Youth Access to Psychiatry program is bridging the gap in youth mental health care by offering free telehealth consultations to primary care physicians as a shortage of child psychiatrists and long wait times leave many children without help—this grant-funded service supports providers managing mental health issues in one in six pediatric visits.  South Carolina ETV

  • Bishop England will face Porter-Gaud tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the Friday Night Rivals football game, which will be streamed on YouTube, MyTV Charleston and abcnews4.com.
