COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ City officials announced that entries are open for the Charleston holiday parade and tree lighting, which will take place downtown on Sunday, Dec 7. The parade will start at 3 p.m. and end with the tree lighting at Marion Square at 6 p.m. The Daniel Island News
- ➤ Charleston County Elections picked finalists from nearly 150 submissions for the 2025 I Voted! Sticker Design Contest — community votes will choose three winners per grade group by Sept. 26 and the winning designs will be printed during early voting for municipal elections along with prizes like museum memberships and art certificates. This contest gives grades K-12 a chance to have their designs seen in our voting process. ABC 4 News
- ➤ The Daniel Island Property Owners’ Association said that the annual Halloween Bash and Pumpkin Walk will be held on Oct. 26 at Smythe Park from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Participants can drop off painted pumpkins between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. and wear costumes for music, food — and fun. - ➤ The folk duo DDRB, featuring Dominic DeLaney and Ricky Bolute who ride exclusively by Amtrak, stopped in Charleston on September 16 to perform two shows at Sugey’s Bar and visit the Dock Street Theater as part of their East Coast tour from South Florida. They funded the tour through a buy a mile initiative and plan to return later to perform at Music Farm. The Post and Courier
- ➤ After Saturday’s sold-out book launch of former Today Show host Hoda Kotb’s new book Jump and Find Joy, several authors will hold events this week in Charleston. The Perfect Frenzy starts at 6 p.m. today at the Library Society, Zone Rogue is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Sept 24 at Buxton Books, House of Smoke is on the agenda for 6 p.m. on Sept 25 at the Library Society, and Life with Flowers will run at 10:30 a.m. on Sept 26 at the Library Society—each event set to offer unique literary insights. - ➤ Thirty-six years ago—Hurricane Hugo made landfall near Sullivan’s Island with winds reaching nearly 140 mph, causing severe damage and prompting local officials to order evacuations and board up City Hall; memories of the storm remind the community of the lifesaving actions taken during that historic event. - ➤ Marine Corps veteran Michael Jerome Plunkett will promote his explosive debut novel Zone Rouge tomorrow at Buxton Books on King St.—the event will feature a discussion with local author Bret Lott and marks a homecoming for the 34-year-old who began writing the book at College of Charleston. - ➤ Several Charleston-area schools and students are being honored by the American Heart Association for raising funds in the 2024-2025 Kids Heart Challenge.
