  • Today, Charleston's homeless veterans took part in the annual Stand Down event where they received meals, counseling and referrals to local shelters—organizers said the event gave veterans a chance to reconnect with essential services in the community.  Live 5 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Uzbekistan Airways placed its largest order today for 14 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners—supporting 35,000 U.S. jobs and boosting production at Boeing in North Charleston. The purchase will expand long-haul routes to the U.S. and worldwide and further strengthen a partnership that has lasted 30 years.  Charleston Regional Business Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Southern Living released the South’s Top 50 BBQ joints list and six Charleston eateries earned a spot on it—Lewis Barbecue, Palmira BBQ, Home Team BBQ, Melvin’s BBQ, Rodney Scott's Whole Hog BBQ and King BBQ—while South Carolina had 11 entries with West Columbia’s City Limits Barbeque ranked as the best.  ABC 4 News
  • Two Charleston restaurants — Husk and Chubby Fish — were named among the nation's most essential by food media Eater, recognizing 20 years of their influence on the dining scene. Both restaurants thanked Eater on social media for the honor.  Count On 2
  • Charleston residents can enjoy a busy weekend that includes a free, dog-friendly celebration at Fort Moultrie on Sept 27, a two-day cosplay event at the Convention Center starting Sept 27, Oktoberfest with German beer on Sept 28 at The Refinery, and Tropical Fiesta in Mount Pleasant on Sept 28—while the MOJA Arts Festival runs from today until Oct 5. ECONOMY NEWS

  • SC Works Trident and Charleston County will host a workforce career fair on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.—at ECPI University in North Charleston to help jobseekers with on-site interviews and resume support as roughly 9,556 people face a 4.0% unemployment rate. Attendees should bring an updated resume to take full advantage of the opportunity.  Count On 2

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Educator Zain Shariff said that schools are teaching students how to use artificial intelligence safely—explaining the do’s and don’ts as classroom technology grows.  FOX Charleston
  • A school resource officer at C E Williams Middle School acted quickly earlier this month when an unconscious staff member suffered a serious medical emergency — Officer Kara Zagol applied life-saving measures and assured calm until paramedics arrived.  Count On 2
  • Teachers’ Supply Closet moved to 8903 Deerwood Drive in North Charleston over the summer to improve distribution of free school supplies to teachers in high-need tri-county schools. Teachers can pick up supplies curbside on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester until October 30—efforts that will better serve local Title One schools.  Count On 2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Charleston Workforce Housing Fund launched this week by a coalition of public and private groups will protect 1,000 rental units in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties by placing a 20-year deed restriction to keep rents stable. Officials say the fund will help secure affordable housing for workers earning between 30% and 100% of the area median income — a measure aimed at preserving community access.  Count On 2
  • Charleston International Airport has opened the state's first Global Entry enrollment center today—helping travelers start their expedited screening process quickly.  Live 5 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Trident Medical Center will break ground today on an emergency room facility on Johns Island to serve nearly 28,000 residents. The new facility on Maybank Highway will include 11 patient rooms, a designated trauma room, and an in-house diagnostics lab, and construction will take 11 months.  Count On 2
