  • The Charleston Parks Conservancy will host the Bloom Festival on October 17th and 18th with garden displays, live music, and local vendor booths — event organizers say the festival will offer family-friendly activities and celebrate local nature — a planned boost for community spirit. This future event is expected to draw residents and visitors for a day of outdoor fun.  Live 5 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Harbor Entrepreneur Center has expanded its Mount Pleasant office space by adding 20,000 square feet with a new lease that extends for a long period—supported by SCRA, Mount Pleasant and Charleston County Economic Development—to offer startups private offices, meeting rooms and event areas. The center supported over 100 companies and generated 150 jobs since 2023.  Charleston Regional Business Journal
  • Breeze Airways announced a new seasonal nonstop flight from Charleston International Airport to Cancun that will launch on Jan. 17 — the flight will take about 2 hours and 40 minutes on an Airbus A220 and offers lowcountry travelers a direct route to tropical beaches.  Charleston City Paper

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Hurricane Humberto became a Category 1 storm on Friday and passed north of the Lesser Antilles, with forecasters warning it may grow stronger and cause high swells along the coast — experts also noted that Invest 94L near Hispaniola has a 90% chance to develop and could threaten the Southeast U.S. coast next week if Humberto does not steer it away.  South Carolina ETV
  • Humberto became the season’s third hurricane on Friday and is expected to strengthen further while staying offshore — the Live 5 Weather team declared Monday and Tuesday as First Alert Weather Days since a tropical wave set to become Imelda will move toward the Lowcountry late Monday or early Tuesday.  News Radio 94.3 WSC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Folly Beach declared a state of emergency on Friday to enable access to state resources in case a tropical storm causes damage. City officials are setting up barricades and a citizen information line — advising residents to secure supplies and watch for weather updates — as they monitor the storm threat.  Count On 2
  • South Carolina’s law against price gouging is now in effect after Gov. McMaster declared a State of Emergency ahead of a tropical weather system that could bring heavy rains and flooding—Attorney General Alan Wilson said the rule will help stop unfair price hikes on food, gasoline, lodging and other goods while the emergency lasts.  My TV Charleston
  • Municipalities in the Lowcountry offered sandbags Friday to residents and businesses to help prevent potential flooding from tropical systems and a cold front. Officials set up distribution stations in Goose Creek at 201 Button Hall Ave — in Isle of Palms at 1174 Pavilion Drive — and in Edisto Beach, limiting households to 10 bags and asking people not to take sand from beaches.  Count On 2
  • Sullivan’s Island has launched a new program—aimed at reducing recurring flooding—by partnering with local agencies to assess and improve drainage systems. The effort will work to lower damage from future heavy rains.  Live 5 News
