  • On Oct. 3, three mega yachts docked at Charleston Yacht Club—Robert Sands’s Spectre valued at $70 million, British billionaire Andrew Currie’s Hampshire valued at $100 million, and a charter vessel Avalon. It is not yet confirmed if the owners plan to use their vessels while docked.  The Post and Courier
  • Stuart Whiteside retired from his full-time role after 40 years with SeamonWhiteside—he will remain a part-time advisor and board member while his legacy on projects like I’On and Mount Pleasant Town Centre is honored with dedicated conference rooms.  Charleston Regional Business Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • On October 2, Taylor Swift fans met at Sweeter than Fiction in Charleston for the release of her album The Life of a Showgirl and enjoyed a sold-out party with themed music and crafts. More local events are planned for the weekend—giving fans a chance to keep the celebration going.  The Post and Courier
  • Charleston is gearing up for Halloween with a busy slate of events including haunted houses at Boone Hall Fright Nights — a show with three new storylines — pop-up scares at Holy City Brewing, and themed theater and costume parties. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Governor Henry McMaster declared October as South Carolina Manufacturing Month and set Friday, October 3 as National Manufacturing Day—recognizing manufacturing's role in job creation, innovation and community development.  ABC 4 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • S.C. teachers in 39 Title I schools earned a share of $4.6 million in merit bonuses through Beemok Education, a program founded by local philanthropists Ben and Kelly Navarro. Charleston teacher Sydney Carroll, who received a $57,250 bonus at Meeting Street Elementary and Middle-Brentwood, said the life-changing award boosted her confidence in her students’ progress — even as some educators debate the fairness of merit pay.  Charleston City Paper

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials are reviewing Phase 2 of the Ashley Landing redevelopment in West Ashley after concerns were raised about pedestrian access — the design consultant will revise the site plan to improve connectivity and preserve sidewalks.   • The federal government shutdown is now in its third day—local food pantries in the Lowcountry are bracing for increased demand as thousands of federal workers face missed paychecks. Leaders at ECCO and the Lowcountry Food Bank report a drop in food donations and canceled shipments, and they urge community support to help families in need.  Count On 2
  • Moncks Corner Rural deputy chief was honored at a line-of-duty funeral service today — the event recognized his service and sacrifice for his community.  Live 5 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • MUSC blessed dozens of therapy dogs on Oct. 3 for the 20th anniversary of its Therapy Animal Program — Charleston Mayor William Cogswell and volunteers attended an event that honored the dogs for easing patient anxiety.  The Post and Courier
  • A brave 13-year-old boy from Summerville fights cancer for a second time as his mother Rachel Kolar raises $10,000 to launch a new chapter called Once Upon A Room—set to change hospital rooms by replacing sterile spaces with creative designs inspired by kids’ favorite shows starting October 17. The effort aims to brighten hospital experiences and improve recovery for sick children.  Count On 2

  • Affordable housing leaders say South Carolina can learn from Florida's model where public and private groups work together—Florida builds strong alliances to help workers like teachers and those in tourism get near affordable homes.
