  • Spectrum Sailing offers free sailing lessons for children with autism in Charleston—20 kids joined the program over the weekend to learn skills like tying knots and handling the jib. Founded by Scott Herman for his son, the program, for ages 10 to 17, uses a lottery to ensure every child gets a fair chance.  ABC 4 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • On Monday morning, some Verizon customers in the Lowcountry reported a potential outage as their phones displayed SOS mode in Summerville — Goose Creek, with nearly 200 reports since 7 a.m. and 439 issues before 9 p.m. Sunday; Verizon has not yet issued an official statement.  ABC 4 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Residents can celebrate Halloween by decorating their homes with creative ideas such as dressing up pumpkins with glitter or crafting spooky displays for indoors and outdoors. The Daniel Island Pumpkin Walk will take place on Oct. 26 while the Daniel Island Garden Club will host its 13th Annual Decorating Contest from Oct. 16-17—judges will view displays from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.  The Daniel Island News
  • Danny McBride and Rough House Pictures from North Charleston paid tribute to Kimberly Herbert Gregory—an acclaimed Vice Principals star who died Oct. 3 and whose work in film and television continues to inspire many.  The Post and Courier
  • At a Hanahan football game in September, four-year-old Finley Rhode—who loved marching bands since he first attended a game at age two—was invited by the school band to conduct the performance, and the students cheered as he lived out his dream (his family called the moment unforgettable).  ABC 4 News
  • The City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs invites South Carolina photographers to submit work for The Message is Clear: A Mentored Photography Exhibition at City Gallery from February through May 2026. Selected artists will receive mentorship from internationally acclaimed photographer Nigel Parry—submissions are due by October 31, 2025.  City of Charleston

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in South Carolina are slightly lower now at an average of $2.75 per gallon as supply chain variances linked to a California refinery fire drive regional differences—GasBuddy data shows a 3.7-cent drop from last week with prices ranging from $2.47 to $3.61 per gallon. National trends reflect a small overall decline while some West Coast markets may see rises as conditions change.  Live 5 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • College of Charleston and NORDAKADEMIE will launch a co-op program in April 2026 to train skilled manufacturing talent as students earn a bachelor's in international engineering and management and gain real-world work experience; employers will fund tuition in this program (three-year course) that meets Lowcountry workforce needs.  Charleston Regional Business Journal
  • MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital announced Monday a new nursing scholarship program to honor nurse Carolyn G. Rucker—the late mother of Grammy award-winning singer Darius Rucker—and to support the next generation of pediatric nurses. The scholarship will cover tuition, fees and books while pairing students with nurse mentors, with part of festival ticket sales on Oct. 10 and 11 helping fund the program.  ABC 4 News

  • Local food banks are preparing for increased need as a government shutdown and rising food prices create uncertainty for Lowcountry families; James Island Outreach sorted 700 pounds of rescue food and will distribute it to clients tomorrow while the Lowcountry Food Bank works with 230 partner agencies—federal food benefits may temporarily pause.  ABC 4 News
  • The South Carolina Ports Authority on Monday named Micah Mallace as president and CEO after the former chief resigned. A native of Charleston with deep maritime and logistics experience, he is expected to start his role soon—helping strengthen the port’s competitiveness.  ABC 4 News

  • Madison Keys, the Australian Open champion, will return for her 13th Charleston Open on Daniel Island from March 28 to April 5, 2026. The tournament will offer equal prize money for the first time—an historic milestone—and will feature enhanced fan experiences with ticket packages available starting Oct. 15.  The Daniel Island News
  • Over the weekend—more than 300 players competed at Collins Park in North Charleston during the inaugural Charleston Metro PPA Challenger Pickleball Tournament, a new series that gives aspiring professionals a pathway to the Carvana PPA Tour.  Count On 2
