COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 22nd Annual Buddy Walk will take place Sunday, Oct. 19 at Etiwan Park on Daniel Island to celebrate Down syndrome with festival fun and a one mile march at 3 p.m. Registration costs $12 in advance or $15 at the event and the funds will support local Down syndrome programs.  The Daniel Island News
  • The Board of Architectural Review-Large voted Wednesday night to save the main building at 280 Meeting St.—the decision protects small businesses like The Bicycle Shoppe, Theatre 99 and 319 Men from being forced out. Community members rallied in support of the historic structure, ensuring it remains a vital part of Charleston’s urban fabric.  ABC 4 News
  • Troop 519 on Daniel Island has set a new record with eight Scouts earning Eagle Scout status in the past two years and two more expected to earn it later this year—completing community projects such as refurbishing dog runs, building oyster reefs, and restoring gravestones.   • Geoff and Nancy Weber founded Heirloom after their wedding video began melting to static so families can preserve old tapes and photos by having them digitized at Daniel Island and Mount Pleasant—helping local residents keep their precious memories safe. Since its launch in 2022, Heirloom has preserved millions of photos and videos and plans to launch an AI-powered app in 2026 to help organize digitized collections.  The Daniel Island News

  • Charleston was named the best small city by Condé Nast Traveler readers for the fourth year in a row—reader votes have given the city the top spot fourteen times in fifteen years, reflecting its strong appeal in food, architecture, and waterfront charm.  Count On 2
  • A local partnership has protected the McClellanville gateway to preserve the town's fishing culture. The partners will work with local officials to keep the tradition alive — a key step in safeguarding community heritage.  Live 5 News
  • This weekend, residents will enjoy Charleston Pride Festival with a parade starting at 9 a.m. on King Street and Riverfront Revival featuring Darius Rucker along with Oktoberfest at St. Matthew’s, Summerville’s Meatball Run and Italian Feast, and Kids are Cool Family Festival with camping and crafts—each event offering music, food and fun for different age groups.  The Post and Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students and librarians filed a federal lawsuit on Tuesday against State Superintendent Ellen Weaver and Greenville County Schools over Regulation 43-170 that banned more than 20 books from public school libraries. The plaintiffs claim the rule is confusing and overbroad — limiting students' access to a diverse range of reading materials.  Live 5 News

  • Charleston residents are advised to prepare for tidal flooding starting today as an offshore system and high tides together raise water levels. City workers will clear storm drains and set up barricades—free parking will be offered at city garages to help protect vehicles.  ABC 4 News
  • Today, City boards will review a road construction project for Cainhoy First Light Phase 3 at 1625 Clements Ferry Road and a townhome parking lot redevelopment for Fenland Expansion at 1990 Daniel Island Drive while a zoning variance for 0 Pineneedle Way in Cainhoy was discussed earlier. On Oct. 2, the Technical Review Committee required revised plans for projects including Atlantic—St. Thomas, Primus Park Subdivision and River Reach Road Improvements.  The Daniel Island News
