- ➤ Lowcountry Food Bank is preparing to serve more federal workers as the government shutdown continues—officials expect a rise in food aid demand and are adjusting operations accordingly. The food bank plans to support those impacted by the shutdown with expanded services. Live 5 News
- ➤ Today, 120 refurbished laptops were given to local youth and families by Palmetto Goodwill — with donations from AT&T and Human I-T — to boost access to education and job training. Count On 2
- ➤ Young Moms Together helps young mothers gain stability by providing housing, childcare, and success coaching, and it recently sold its downtown group home to purchase two single-family homes in West Ashley that will open in November—offering a path to independence. - ➤ Chef Nikko Cagalanan and his wife Paula Kramer will open a larger Kultura space at 267 Rutledge Ave on Oct. 24 with plans for a full bar + extra kitchen equipment for preparing traditional Filipino dishes. - ➤ Charleston County School District is training teachers to use new wearable panic buttons that send alerts for emergencies—teachers will test the badges in upcoming in-person sessions while full implementation is planned for the new year. Count On 2
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Charleston has battled flooding for over 300 years and now faces rising risks as high tides are expected to increase flood days to 60 per year by 2051. Local officials and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers proposed a $1 billion seawall project — called the Peninsula Perimeter Protection Project — but its start remains uncertain as it awaits congressional approval amid a federal shutdown. - ➤ South Carolina will observe Earthquake Preparedness Week from October 12th through 18th as state officials urge residents to learn about the seismic fault system and prepare for potential earthquakes—communities and businesses will join the Great Southeast ShakeOut drill on October 16th at 10:16 a.m. while experts advise checking earthquake insurance options. - ➤ Electric scooters are becoming more common on Charleston streets, and police warn riders to use common sense and wear safety gear — state law sets speed limits and safety rules even though many scooters exceed these limits.
