ECONOMY NEWS

  • After International Paper closed its Savannah mill in September, local landowners have faced uncertainty over forest management and reduced timber buyers—forcing many to consider new revenue options. Forestry experts say mill shutdowns have disrupted long-standing partnerships and altered the regional timber market.  The Post and Courier
  • Georgetown County tourism marked its strongest fiscal year ever by collecting over $3.6 million in accommodations tax—a 7.4 percent rise driven by strong demand for Airbnb and Vrbo rentals on the Waccamaw Neck. June revenue fell 3.8 percent from last year’s record, but officials remain positive about the summer season’s overall performance.  The Post and Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The federal government shutdown has left concerns that funds for the Women, Infants and Children program—which serves 100,000 local mothers and children—might be cut if the shutdown continues, though a DPH spokesperson said the program operated normally as of last week.
